Students learn about women fighting for their own and others' rights around the world and relate it to the sustainable development goals.

Formål:
This lesson aims to broaden the students’ knowledge of issues affecting areas of the English speaking world, i.e. women’s rights in Nigeria. It gives them the language to discuss this complex topic, and time to practice doing so. Students will watch a short clip of an activist fighting for women’s rights in Nigerian universities, read newspaper reports from Nigeria on the same subject, and discuss the state of gender equality in that context.

- Watch the video as an introduction to goal 5: Gender Equality.
- Ask the class which words they think they will need to talk about gender equality. Write them out and practice them with the group.
- Read a message from Toyin, an activist from Nigeria, where she talks about women’s rights in Nigeria and around the World (download PDF nederst på siden).

In small groups, students answer the following questions:
- What do you know about Nigeria?
- Which issues does Toyin highlight as important in the fight for women’s rights in Nigeria?
- What examples of gender inequality does Toyin give from around the world?
- What does Toyin do to fight for gender equality in Nigeria?

Toyin says that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Oby Ezekwesili, and Erelu Bisi Fayemi are fighting for women’s rights in Nigeria. In the same groups, the students conduct research on one of the three Nigerian women’s rights activists. They can take their starting point in the articles and videos found under Materials.
The groups will continue to research these feminists before the next lesson, and prepare a presentation on their work which they will do in the following lesson.

- What do you think of the women who were presented today? Why are they feminists?
- What sort of restrictions do women face around the world?
- Is there gender equality in Denmark? How so/why not?
